YOUR TEACHER

I’m Alexánder Pewló, a multi-instrumentalist specialised in the plucked strings of the Eastern Mediterranean: bağlama (saz), oud, lavta, yaylı tanbur and bouzouki.

I have studied makam music and modal composition with masters such as Efrén López, Sinan Ayyıldız, Cihan Türkoğlu, Evgenios Voulgaris and Christos Barbas, including study trips to Greece and Turkey and the Labyrinth Musical Workshop in Crete. I lead the ensemble Yayla and have performed in venues such as the Museo Nacional de Antropología (Madrid) and Centro Sefarad-Israel.

I have taught music for well over a decade and I direct my own music school in Spain. Teaching these instruments — clearly, patiently and with real repertoire from day one — is what I love doing most.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Turkish & Ottoman repertoire — from Anatolian folk songs to classical makam pieces.
  • Makam theory made practical — intervals, seyir, and how to actually use them when you play.
  • Technique — mızrap/tezene plectrum work, şelpe fingerstyle, ornamentation and clean left-hand playing.
  • Ear and reading — learn by ear the traditional way, and read notation when it helps.
  • Style and tradition — Anatolian, Sephardic and Mediterranean approaches to the same strings.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Live one-to-one video lessons (Google Meet or Zoom) — 50 minutes.
  • Materials after every lesson: PDF scores, tabs and audio references to practise with.
  • All levels — from your very first notes to advanced makam work.
  • English or Español — whichever you’re comfortable with.
  • Students worldwide — I’m based in Spain (CET) and schedule flexibly across time zones.

PRICING

FAQ

Do I need my own instrument?

Yes — but if you don’t have one yet, don’t buy blind. Tell me your budget and I’ll help you choose a good bağlama before you spend a cent.

I’m a complete beginner. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Most of my students started from zero. We build technique and repertoire step by step, and you’ll be playing real music from the first lessons.

What about time zones?

I’m in Spain (CET/CEST) and teach students across Europe, the Americas and beyond. We’ll find a slot that works for both of us.

What if I need to cancel a lesson?

No problem — lessons can be rescheduled free of charge with at least 24 hours’ notice.
